How to Choose the Right Designer for Your Startup
JANUARY 5, 2026
You've decided to hire a designer. With so many portfolios out there, how do you choose the right one for your startup? Here's what to look for beyond the pretty pictures.
1. Look for Business Understanding
A good designer thinks about your business goals, not just aesthetics. They should ask about your users, your competitors, and what success looks like for you. If they only talk about colors and fonts without understanding your market, keep looking.
2. Check Their Process
How do they work? Do they start with research, or jump straight into visuals? A designer who understands the importance of user research, wireframing, and iteration will save you time and money. Ask about their workflow and how they handle feedback.
"The best designers don't just make things pretty — they make things that work for your business."
3. Technical Knowledge Matters
Can they design for development? A designer who understands how their designs will be built makes better decisions. They know what's possible, what's expensive, and how to hand off files that developers can actually use. This means faster launches and fewer surprises.
4. Communication Is Everything
You'll work closely with your designer. Can they explain their decisions clearly? Do they listen to feedback without getting defensive? A good designer collaborates — they don't just disappear and come back weeks later with a surprise.
5. Experience in Your Industry Helps
While not essential, a designer who has worked in your industry will already understand your users, your competitors, and common pitfalls. This can accelerate the process. But don't prioritize this over raw talent and fit — sometimes fresh perspective is exactly what you need.
6. Ask About Their Tools
Are they using modern tools? Figma, Webflow, Framer? Designers who stay current with tools can work faster and deliver better results. It also shows they're invested in their craft.
